Overview of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II is the 16th Asantehene (King of the Asante Kingdom) and one of the most influential traditional leaders in Africa. He ascended the Golden Stool on 26 April 1999, succeeding his brother, Otumfuo Opoku Ware II. He is a direct descendant of Osei Tutu I, the founder of the Asante Kingdom, and reigns as the spiritual, cultural, and political head of Asanteman.
Born 6 May 1950 and named Barima Kwaku Dua, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has distinguished himself as a visionary monarch who blends Asante tradition with modern governance, championing peace, education, health, and economic development.
Royal Lineage and Early Life
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II is the youngest of five children of Nana Afua Kobi Serwaa Ampem II, the revered Asantehemaa (Queen Mother of Asante). From an early age, he was carefully groomed in Asante customs, leadership, and statecraft under the guidance of his uncle, Oheneba Mensah Bonsu, who was enstooled as Hiahene in 1952.
This upbringing instilled in him deep respect for traditional authority, diplomacy, reconciliation, and service to the people.
Education and Professional Background
Barima Kwaku Dua received his secondary education at Sefwi Wiawso Secondary School, under the guardianship of Nana Kwadwo Aduhene II, the Paramount Chief of Sefwi Wiawso. He later continued at Osei Kyeretwie Secondary School in Kumasi.
In 1971, he enrolled at the Institute of Professional Studies (IPS), Legon, where he studied Accountancy. He later traveled to the United Kingdom, continuing his studies at Kilburn Polytechnic and the University of North London, focusing on Human Resource Development and Public Administration.
Before ascending the Golden Stool, he built a distinguished international career as a Senior Consultant with Mutual of Omaha Insurance Company in Toronto, a Finance Officer with Oxon Ltd. in London, and a Personnel Administrator with the Manpower Services Commission at Brent Council in the United Kingdom, before returning to Ghana in 1989 to establish Transpomech International (Ghana) Ltd.
Ascension to the Golden Stool
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II was unanimously accepted as Asantehene by the Asante Kingdom and the nation at large. His ascension was marked by calm authority, wisdom, and moral clarity, inspiring loyalty across traditional, political, and social lines.
His leadership philosophy is rooted in the belief that traditional leadership must heal divisions, reconcile conflicts, and mobilize people toward progress.
Leadership, Peace, and Conflict Resolution
One of the defining achievements of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s reign is his commitment to peace and stability. Since assuming office, he has successfully resolved over 500 land and chieftaincy disputes, many of which had persisted for decades and threatened regional stability.
In recognition of his wisdom, the Government of Ghana appointed him Chairman of the Committee of Eminent Chiefs tasked with resolving the Dagbon (Yendi Skin) conflict, a crisis that had destabilized northern Ghana. His intervention significantly reduced tensions and advanced reconciliation.
Education, Health, and Social Development Initiatives
Otumfuo Education Fund
In 2000, Otumfuo established the Otumfuo Education Fund, aimed at expanding access to quality education from primary to tertiary and vocational levels. To date, the fund has supported over 5,000 students, including orphans and children from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Foundation
The Otumfuo Education Fund and the Serwaa Ampem AIDS Foundation (led by Lady Julia Osei Tutu) operate under the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Foundation, which supports education, healthcare, youth empowerment, and social development across Ghana.
Health Initiatives
Otumfuo also established a Health Fund focused on:
- Reducing maternal and infant mortality
- Combating Buruli ulcer, glaucoma, and other eye diseases
- Supporting the eradication of Guinea worm
- Promoting child immunization in partnership with Rotary International
Economic Development and World Bank Partnership
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II secured a World Bank grant for the Promoting Partnerships with Traditional Authorities Project (PPTAP). This landmark initiative empowered traditional authorities to lead community-driven development, resulting in:
