Supporting Healthcare and Education in Asanteman
The Asanteman Association of Chicago & Midwest (AACM) is committed to improving lives in Ghana through targeted humanitarian initiatives focused on healthcare delivery and educational development. In partnership with generous donors, institutions, and community leaders in the United States, AACM has successfully organized large-scale donations to hospitals and libraries in the Ashanti Region — strengthening the welfare of underserved communities while preserving its mission of service to Asanteman.

Medical Equipment Donation to Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), Kumasi
In March 2008, AACM partnered with Mr. Francis Antwi-Barfi and his family of Maywood, Illinois, as well as the Otumfuo Educational Fund (Ghana) to support the shipment of a 40-foot shipping container of hospital equipment and medical supplies to Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi, Ghana — one of the country’s premier teaching hospitals. AACM contributed $1,500 toward international freight costs, helping make the delivery possible. The container included vital, life-saving equipment designed to support kidney disease treatment and general medical care, including:
17 hospital beds
10 dialysis machines
Cubicle curtains (2 cases)
Medical gloves (29 cases)
Additional hospital supplies and equipment
The medical donations were generously provided by the Sinai Health System, Chicago, Illinois. The initiative was sparked by the compassion of a philanthropist who mobilized community action after learning of the tragic death of a young kidney patient in Ghana. Her advocacy moved Mr. Antwi-Barfi and his family to lead the grassroots effort to source dialysis machines and other essential hospital equipment for Ghanaian healthcare facilities.

Donation of 5,000 Books to the Ashanti Public Library
In addition to healthcare efforts, AACM expanded its humanitarian outreach to support education and literacy development in Ghana. In 2008, AACM shipped approximately 5,000 educational materials — including fiction books, non-fiction texts, children’s learning aids, and audio-visual resources — to the Ashanti Public Library & Cultural Center in Kumasi. The donation filled 100 large shipping boxes and represented one of AACM’s most significant educational contributions.
